Mark Abramson was a bartender on Castro Street, Haight Street, and South of Market during the worst years of the AIDS crisis, roughly from 1984 to 1996 when new life-saving drugs came on the market. He was also involved in several of the major fundraising events of the times, from gay bars to the waterfront piers of San Francisco and theaters in between. For My Brothers is filled with true stories of encounters with Connie Francis, Johnnie Ray, and Christine Jorgensen, plus friendships with Al Parker, John Preston, and Sylvester and dozens of lesser known characters who deserve to be remembered.

I've read all of Mark's books, and confess I was a bit apprehensive about the subject matter for this one. I've lived in San Francisco since 1985 and have sung with the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus since that time. When I joined only 7 members had died, six of them from AIDS. Today there are almost 200 members who have been lost, all except a small handful to the plague. I'm also the historian for the Chorus and I've worked over the years to educate the current members on the legacy they owe to the men who have gone before. Mark's memoir of his friends is far from a morbid recollection, rather he strives to emphasize the good times he enjoyed with the men he is remembering. It was hard at the end reading through the list of his friends (many of whom I knew as well), but it also helps keep them alive in the minds of those of us left behind. He inserts a few actual obituaries into the text, and for more please reference the GLBT Historical Society's online obituary database: http://obit.glbthistory.org/olo/index.jsp

Just returned from Punta Cana. For the most part a very nice experience.
While away read Mark Abramson's new book 'For My Brothers'. This was one of the best reading experiences I have had in my life. I thoroughly enjoyed Mark's wonderful emotional narrative of our community experience through the lives and events of dozens of men in San Francisco during the depths of our despair when AIDS became the defining crisis of our struggle. Everyone needs to experience this book. Both my partner and I ended up in the midst of an all inclusive resort in tears but we would never have wanted to miss reliving our saga as it was expressed so well by Mark.
BRAVO Mark Abramson!
Very poignant to me, as I went through the 80's & 90's in San Francisco and knew many of the people that Mark talked about in For My Brothers. The book brought back many memories, and even tears as I remembered those years. So glad that he wrote this book!

This is an amazing and intense book. Before I couldn't imagine being in the the thick of the epidemic of AIDS in San Francisco, but thanks to Mark's excellent writing I got to feel a big taste of what it was like to lose friend after friend. It was quite moving and I had a hard time putting it down. I am also a fan of the Beach Reading series. I hope he also writes more memoirs like this.
This book is a historical novel of the early days of the AIDS crisis. The author's personal account of what happened. I thought it was very well written. This book should be read by all gays living now. These brothers must not be forgotten. Friends gone forever.
When I started to read this book I had to put it down. It took me a few weeks to go back to it. I went through similar experiences losing a partner, friends, workers and just people I knew. I always have these memories, this brought it all out. Thank you Mark Abramson for writing this book.
"For My Brothers" is a touching and beautifully written personal account of those years which begin with a mystery disease, a community torn asunder, the coming together of angels who help one another through a gut-wrenching time in our history, and a tribute to all who suffered, helped, laughed in the face of despair, and those who came out of that era with renewed hope, but indelible remembrances of friends, lovers, and family who succumbed to the horror of AIDS. Just when Abramson brings you to the brink of tears, he interjects stories that will make you laugh, activism that will make you proud, and a lust for life that will make you want to hug all those nearest to you and tell them how much you love them. He has given us a story for those who lived through these terrible years and a history that will make those who were not there, deeply appreciate the resilience of our gay brothers and the amazing care given by our gay sisters. Thank you Mr. Abramson for writing this book!
Mark Abramson’s FOR MY BROTHERS isn’t a history book. But it is. It isn’t a book about AIDS. But it is. FOR MY BROTHERS is Abramson’s account of his life as a bartender and co-producer of the Men Behind Bars AIDS fundraisers in San Francisco in the 1980s and 90s.

The book is an episodic collection of stories about the people—friends, acquaintances, strangers—who were a part of Abramson’s life in San Francisco. Some people are well known, and others are average citizens living their lives. Regardless, because Abramson focuses on people and on their stories, they all come across as real and very human. They feel like old friends.

Though many of the stories are seemingly unrelated, when put together—with Abramson himself as the connecting force—they create a full, rich portrait of life in that time and place. At first, AIDS is not a part of the story. As the book continues, however, AIDS creeps in slowly around the edges, ultimately becoming overwhelming as it permeates the lives of the people we have come to know chapter after chapter. To quote Carl R. Rogers, “what is most personal is most universal.” By keeping it personal, Abramson has created an immensely readable addition to the AIDS literary canon and to memoir in general. It isn’t a history book. But it is.
